Thank you, Hasbro! Sep 19, 2008
By Monty Moonlight Those of us who are as obsessed with Indiana Jones as we are Star Wars fanatics have waited a LONG time for a well populated Indy action figure line covering all of Dr. Jones' amazing exploits! And now, we finally have it! These 3 3/4 inch figures from Hasbro are just too cool! Granted, some may be more impressive than others, but the first three I chose from the ranks were all excellent!
This new line of Indiana Jones figures was introduced at the time of the new film, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", and the first releases only covered that film and Raiders of the Lost Ark. As much as I wanted those figures, I held off. In general, action figures of this size seem to be way overpriced at the usual 7-8 bucks in retail stores, and I really wanted to be inspired by seeing some characters who have never been action figures before added to the line (yeah, back in the '80's there were some Raiders figures from Kenner, but that line never continued, and Disney theme parks carry their own Raiders-based line that was an improvement, but nothing compared to these). Well, early this week it finally happened. I found the figures reduced a few bucks at my local retailers and the Last Crusade characters added to the bunch! Right away, I snatched up the three I had wanted the most, Young Indy, Dr. Henry Jones (Indy's dad), and, of course, Indiana.
I chose this Crystal Skull Indiana as my first adult Indy because I wanted one in full Indy gear that would look appropriate posed next to his father, but also next to Mutt Williams, whom I hope to get next. Though, I do hope to get more versions of the man in the hat in time. Highly detailed, this figure sports a great likeness to Harrison Ford and wears his classic leather jacket with WWII MKVII gas mask bag underneath. He comes with his legendary fedora, his pistol, and of course, his bullwhip (in mid-lash), and Indy's left hand is interchangeable. In the package, he holds the alien-shaped crystal skull, but this hand can be replaced with one that will hold other objects. Indy is well jointed at the knees, elbows, hips, shoulders, head, and waist. Also, like all the figures, he comes with a paper crate in which you can find a secret Indy artifact (no secret really, this version of Indiana Jones comes with the Peacock's Eye, an object interestingly first introduced in a Young Indiana Jones TV movie but also playing a role in Crystal Skull if I remember correctly, though these secret objects aren't to scale with these figures and would probably better suit 6 inch figures). The crate also contains a sticker to save in case you want to redeem 6 of them (and the price of a figure) for the mail away 3 3/4 figure of one of the aliens from Crystal Skull and his throne. The order form for this is found on the Hasbro website. I'm hoping to do that myself when I land three more. My only complaints about this particular figure (and I had no complaints about the other two I purchased) is that when his had is put on his head, it looks large and awkward, and it would have been nice if the crystal skull Indy came with wasn't attached to his hand. However, these are understandable issues. Indy looks just as cool holding his hat (I'll be sure to buy one of the figures that has it permanently on his head, since I think some of them do) and it's possible one of the other figures comes with a handless crystal skull. All in all, an excellent purchase for the Indiana Jones fanatic! I'm very happy with all three Indy characters I have so far and can't wait to collect more, including the Temple of Doom ones I have eagerly awaited. I just hope they do make some of the other characters, like Toht, a plain clothes Belloq, Professor Indy, German mechanic, wise-man, and some Hovitos from Raiders, Marcus, variations of Indy, and a Sallah from Last Crusade (and a motorcycle with sidecar), a Crystal Skull Marion, Mac, and Ox, a Temple of Doom Shaman, Maharajah and variations of Indy, and some TV version Young Indiana Jones figures would also be welcome!
