I'm Torn! My son loves it...I am disappointed in Amazon/MMP... Sep 18, 2010
By Roman First let me say that my youngest son absolutely loved this toy rifle. I took him and my oldest son clay shooting recently and my youngest was not old enough to shoot but he did listen and here, a month later, he was using this toy to practice proper stance and address. Besides that, he loves the bolt action and the rifle to him is very realistic. I guess that might very well be the most important thing so decide as you will.
However, as the parent and consumer I was very disappointed upon receipt. The rifle came in a box alone with no type of display packaging. In the image, it appears the gun is packaged with a cardboard background with marketing designs, etc. This item arrived attached to nothing...just alone in a box (with brown paper to limit its movement). Add to that, the unit's metal bolt piece was riddled with scratches and abrasions. If you had to guess you'd assume that this item was either returned by somebody who previously used it (which shouldn't be as it was listed as a new item) or some Amazon (or MMP) yokels in the warehouse used this item for some break-time fun. If I found the unit like this in a store I wouldn't have spent more than 4 seconds looking at it.
I want to be clear that my son's enjoyment of the toy has not been diminished by the exterior "damage" but I, as a consumer and parent, am very disappointed. It was a last minute buy for his B-Day and I was not in a position to return it. I will be contacting amazon though to voice my displeasure and see what happens.
Summary: I believe your son will most likely enjoy this toy but beware that you may (or may not) receive a used or not-new in appearance unit.

Historical Gun for 10 year old Jan 01, 2010
By Nicole Alvarez
"Historical Guns"
This gun is solid wood and metal. It is very sturdy. My son is very interested in war history and feels like he is part of history when he uses this Springfield Rifle. He can shoot and pretend to reload over and over again. We have purchased many historical rifles for our son, and this one seems to be his most rewarding.

Durable toy rifle May 12, 2010
By David I don't actually own this toy, but I used it extensively at a friend's house. We were shooting a student film about gangsters for our senior project and needed prop weapons to use; luckilly, my friend had this toy rifle! It's small enough for a kid, although not tiny (it still looked convincing in our student film). However, if you are older than around 12 the shoulder strap will probably not fit you at all (it can be unscrewed and removed if you choose).
Now, the most important thing about this toy is its duribility. Growing up in the 90's, I'm pretty used to cheap plastic toys made in China. Even licenced toys, like Star Wars Stormtrooper rifles, are made out of plastic, so it was a breath of fresh air to see that they still make toys out of wood and metal. It is equally impressive that gun toys are still being made--it seems as if few stores even stock them any more, which is a shame. If you are looking for a gift for a kid who has an interrest in weapons, war history, or the old west, this would be a great gift. Also good for a kid's Halloween costume, although make sure the orange tip can be seen.
Lastly, one of the coolest features of the trainerrifle is the functioning bolt action. It works (presumably) just like a real rifle, and is very sturdy. If it could stand up to a bunch of high school guys repeatedly racking back the bolt, I'm sure it can withstand the roughest play.

Best Toy Gun EVER!! Dec 30, 2009

My 4 year old just loves this bolt action riffle. He picks it up and pulls the bolt back several times and aims for his target. He is just too cute with this riffle. This gift is perfect if your little man is a hunter!!

gift to a 5 year old gun enthusiast Oct 20, 2008
By Artemis I bought this gift for a neighbor's son who was turning 5 and a gun enthusiast. I would not have bought it for anyone else except this child as his folks allow him to watch documentaries about guns and their uses. This child knows more about guns than I ever care to know! Put it this way, this child's cake was a shape of a gun--surprise, surprise! This toy gun is really life-like and a good thing it has an orange tip as required by law, so it looks somewhat like a toy. There is a larger to-scale version, that may or may not have the orange tip but too long for a 5 year old child. Not only did I purchased this toy for its life-like qualities but also for its proposed durability as mentioned in the product description. It is made of solid wood and steel working parts. It appears to be well made and sturdy. Also, it has the bolt action that simulates the real bolt action of a trainer rifle. In addition, the one great thing is that this gun does NOT shoot out any objects, which is ideal for a child whom is not so responsible about what he may aim at, whether my own child or any other living creature. As far as this type of toy goes, it seems to be a nice quality, maybe even a keepsake type toy that will endure some rough use. It seems to be super fun for the child I purchased it for, but maybe boring for a child with no interests in weapons. Regarding its educational properties, well, it does not rate high up on MY list of products for educational purposes.
