the first and most for your money...Christopher Reeves Superman figure Sep 05, 2011
By Chad Bankston At originally $60 this figure is amazing!! It being the very first, after a very long wait, C.R Superman. The sculpt is great and costume. The paint could use a little work. For value this is the way to go for the C.R.S. Comes with swappable hands, a flying base and a crystal computer with clear and green crystal. It's great! You can't help but see C.R when looking at this fig.

Worthy if your going to customize your own figure Dec 14, 2011
By Collector 4 Life The Mattel Movie Masters Superman is a contradiction in so many ways. It is abundantly obvious Mattel was trying to tap into that starved Christopher Reeve's market before the much publicized and hyped Hot Toys figure came out and squashed the competition. But what is also clear is Mattel rushed this figure into production and so the end result was a mixed bag of curious hits and amazing misses. I guess I'll start with the positives and work down from there.
What truly works here are the accessories and packaging. Mattel really did a splendid job on creating packaging that is easily on par with DC Direct lines and even gives the Hot Toys Superman a run for his money. The box is well designed with a glorious array of photos from the film and opens artfully to reveal a nice array of accessories. Those accessories include two pairs of alternate hands, nicely sculpted for dramatic poses; Superman's crystal altar complete with clear and green Krypton crystals (oddly missing from the Hot Toys version); in addition to a presentation stand with translucent attachments to hold the figure in any desired pose. Well thought out and nicely manufactured. Superman's outfit is also well made and features everything the Hot Toys version has except for a wired cape which Hot Toys gave collectors for limited posing. Now for the negatives...
The boots are really sloppy in construction and are clearly too tall on this figure. The general construction, including the stitching seams, distract and give the boots a cheap "doll-ish" appearance, not suitable for this price point. The body itself has a number of issues. First, the top of the arms are entirely too exaggerated in scale which gives him a cartoony look. That theme is repeated in the ribcage and chest area where he appears to be taking a huge breath to expand his chest to gigantic proportions. Once again, the end result is a somewhat cartoon style appearance. And finally we have the head. There have been a lot of opinions about this, both very good and bad. I'm of the opinion the sculpt is actually very good. It's the paint job that undersells it. No, it's certainly not in line with the glorious Hot Toys sculpt. But a nicely done paint job would have brought out the strong points that are evident on this example. The eye brows are too bold and simplistic in application. And the eye balls are not given enough detail and gloss where they needed it. The skin paint is also layered on too thick and takes away from details within the sculpt that would have flushed out a better likeness. No accents around the eyelids, lips, or chin region to bring out those details either.
So what's the fix? Well, in my opinion, a good custom is at hand here. Lots of keepers in this set. If you buy a Hot Toys Superman head, boots, and body, you can finish it off with what you have here. And for less than half the price of what folks are paying for the Hot Toys version. You can get all three of those for around $100.00 with the best auctions I have seen close. By doing that, you get the strengths of both sets while making one unique version that will actually look better than either one of these. If you don't want to go the Hot Toys route, and are a reasonably good artist with paint, I would remove and repaint the existing head and place it on one of the many lower priced bodies that are applicable to this particular head joint. There are plenty of other options as well. If your happy with this particular body, then maybe a simply repaint will suffice. But, at any rate, the stand and accessories are great. And if you get the Lex Luthor figure, you get the Kryptonite necklace that looks nearly identical to the special edition Hot Toys version. So lots of ways to enhance the look and quality of this figure and get the end result of what you want without overpaying the prices Hot Toys is asking for theirs.
Picture does not do it justice Mar 06, 2012
By Bonnie It was more than we expected. The picture does not do it justice. Really looks good. I would recommend this to all collectors.
