5Nomar Garciaparra ready to fire the ball to first at Fenway  May 24, 2004 By Lawrance M. Bernabo
There was a MLB Series 2 figure in 2002 of Nomar Garciaparra at the plate, but now that he has married Mia Hamm there is clearly a need for a second figure, showing the Red Sox shortstop in the field. Consequently McFarlane Toys has produced a MLB Series 9 figure in 2004 with Garciaparra about to throw the ball, which he has not done this season to date because he has been injured and not because he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers after Boston signed Alex Rodriguez to play shortstop (which is an entirely different story explaining why the MLB Series 8 figure of Rodriguez is wearing the wrong uniform). This 6" figure shows Garciaparra in the home white Boston Red Sox uniform; there is also a road gray uniform variation if for some reason you think that looks better (it does not). You can also look forward to McFarlane Toys putting out a MLB Two-Pack later in 2004 that has Garciaparra sliding into second base a split second after New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has fired off the ball to second base in a game played at Fenway Park.

The voting for the American League starting shortstop in the All-Star game this summer should be interesting. Garciaparra has been sidelined by his Achilles tendon, Jeter is batting under .200, and Rodriguez now plays third base. This figure has some limited articulation with the arms and neck, but what you see is basically what you are going to want to go with. Garciaparra is slightly airborne, the figure being attached to the Fenway Park infield by virtue of a small metal pin. The key details of note on this figure are the distinctive facial hair and all those neat creases in on the front left of his jersey where it is tucked into his pants (I always like that sort of detail on the uniform more than the dirt on the pants leg). I like the posture on this one because it captures the shortstop as he is about to fire the ball to first while moving in that direction.

Garciaparra was the American League Rookie of the year in 1997 during which he also made the A.L. All-Star team for the first time, which he has done since in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 (he was injured in 2001). He also won back-to-back American League batting crowns in 1999 and 2000 with .357 and .372 averages (he was injured in 2001). Currently his career batting average is .323, the same as his postseason batting average, while averaging 30 home runs and 117 RBIs over a complete 162 game season, which he has never quite reached. He might be married to Mia Hamm, but his first name is really Anthony (Nomar is his middle name), so life is a tradeoff even at that level.
