Failing electronics in addition to its other shortcomings Dec 29, 2010

We have a bunch of toy lightsabers in our house. We have the other models that retract completely and have spring-loaded mechanisms. Those models have had touchy electronics, but I've been able to repair them with some effort (see my other reviews for general DIY instructions). We thought that this model, due to its much simpler electronics, would be more reliable (lights and sound are activated by a mere button). Unfortunately, it has proven less reliable electronically. We lost sound within a matter of days. Hasbro, please, this isn't rocket science. The only good thing I have to say for Hasbro is that they've pretty well nailed the light-cones; these have held up to a remarkable amount of abuse and we've never had a crack or failure.
As with the other lightsabers I've reviewed, I was able to open this up and fix it. I don't recommend this for most people, and I was only able to access a very limited area of the handle. Nevertheless, should you lose sound, there is some chance that one of the speaker wires has come detached from the speaker. The speaker is housed at the base of the handle. You don't need to unscrew anything, but you do need to cut the plastic around the circumference. I did this with a hacksaw at a point about a half an inch up from the bottom (just below the raised parts of the handle). Once the end was off, I was able to re-solder the speaker wire and using hot glue, fix the speaker to the end and reseal the handle. If you've got a problem further inside, you'll probably have to do more cutting (and potentially destroy the handle). Removing the screws did not do anything for me (the recessed screw is obvious, there is another towards the light cone that has been covered with a plastic button). Best of luck!

Amazon is misrepresenting this item. I purchased it for my niece based on the product description, which said that it is a Force Action Lightsaber that retracts fully into the handle. It does not retract, and it is not spring loaded as Force Action Lightsabers are supposed to be. If you're not expecting that, then it's a perfectly fine toy, but it should not be sold as something it is not!

This product was totally misrepresented. I plan to complain directly to the poster of this item on Amazon. I was looking to order two Force Action light sabers for me and my son to play with, replacing my last Force Action light sabers (which were very fun). However, instead I ended up paying $40 for some $15 version of light sabers that dont even come close to retracting and have no spring loaded action. I wouldnt be so pissed except my son and i was expecting the same type sabers that we played with for a couple years. Even worse, I paid twice what this fake model is worth. He is 8 and very disappointed. I am equally disappointed. Whoever posted this item should be put under review or booted off Amazon.

I had bought the Vader Red on clearance and decided to get one for my 2 yr old son. He only has trouble extending it, otherwise has no problems using it. The sounds are definitely the best part about it. Sometime you have to hit an object a little harder to get the "contact" noise to register. I can definitely see where these could have problems regarding the electronics. The mechanism that controls the sounds takes a beating; it is only a matter of time before it will stop working.
